Maningrida NO MORE Round

Maningrida recently hosted a NO MORE AFL round with a powerful display of unity, as over 200 community members came together to take a stand and commit to ending domestic and family violence. Highlights from the event included:

  • Players, Officials and spectators all contributed to the games being played in great spirit, fairness and supportive comradery;
  • NO MORE Spirit medals awarded to players who’ve demonstrated ongoing respectful behaviors on/off the field-Presented by Community leaders;
  •  NO MORE fishing lures awarded to Community volunteers who’ve demonstrated respect on/off the field-Presented by the Mayor of West Arnhem Regional Council;
  • Inspiring speeches from local leaders calling for action.

NO MORE AFL round was created through collaboration with the AFL Maningrida Committee, NTG Sport and Recreation, West Arnhem Regional Council and the Nja-marleya Cultural Leaders and Justice Group whose support made the event so impactful. The games were played over 2 days, with players, officials and spectators hearing speeches about the urgent need for community to unite and support each other. Deputy Chair of the Nja-marleya Cultural Leaders and Justice Group, Tim Wilton delivered powerful addresses before each game emphasising the importance of being role models to the younger generation on and off the field.

The event was a pivotal moment for the Mangrida community, as it provided a platform for local residents from all teams to come together in solidarity against domestic and family violence. The demonstration of support not only highlighted the urgency of addressing DFV but also fostered a sense of shared responsibility and collective action. By publicly committing to end domestic and family violence, the event played a key role in raising awareness and strengthening community ties. The positive response to the event, especially the requests from senior community elders to have active at the Grand Final in March suggests that the initiative resonated deeply with the community.

Ongoing events such as the NO MORE round, are key to empowering local champions to take the lead in driving change within their community. By equipping community leaders with the knowledge and tools to advocate for respectful behavior, these types of events can create a lasting impact in reducing DFV. As these local leaders work together, they can foster a stronger, more connected community where the reduction of DFV becomes a shared commitment, resulting in sustainable positive change.
