NO MORE Alcohol and Drugs Cricket Carnival
On Saturday 23rd April, Wurli Wurlinjang Health Service’s Alcohol and Other Drugs team staged the Inaugural NO MORE Alcohol & Drugs Cricket carnival held at the Town Oval in Katherine. Four teams participated in the Super 6’s formatted event. NO MORE worker, Marcus Rosas, who has been part of the NT’s cricket community for the last 40 years, was in attendance.
After his 40 years of participation, Marcus knows that alcohol is a large part of the cricketing culture, with players having a beer during and after the game. However, it is time to change the culture. He believes the idea of promoting NO MORE Domestic Violence and raising an awareness of alcohol and other drugs is key in changing the culture of cricket.
“It won’t happen overnight, but if we all do our part in raising an awareness, hopefully at some point in the future, someone will run with the idea,” says Marcus.
The carnival was supported by Northern Territory Government Department of Health, Northern Territory Cricket and the NO MORE Program, who provided assistance. Their support of this initiative was hugely appreciated.
A huge thanks goes to Ms Leah Burch (scorer) and Mr Darryl Lee (umpire) who volunteered their time to come down and assist with the day’s proceedings. Another huge thanks must go to Mr Sandeep Buttar and the rest of Wurli’s Drugs and Health team. His vision is the reason this carnival went ahead.
